Recipe for firework-proofing a very scared dog

This should work fairly well on most dogs.

Buy a 500gram cooked sausage/kookworst (the kind you slice and put on your bread). In fact, buy a few.
Slice into small squares.
Start when the banging is still fairly interspersed: every bang, immediately give the frightened pooch a little piece of sausage.
The dog will figure out this little scheme very quickly! The focus will shift from flinching and rushing off in a panic, to waiting for the noise signal that will get them the treat.

Then graduate to only rewarding the whistlers or big bangs or whatever makes them go into total panic.
Be prepared for your hands to be almost de-fingered at first as the flight/greed combo makes them snap for the treat.
At some point when the focus is entirely on the yummy rewards for that noise, start rewarding intermittently.

Keep doing this the entire day.

By the beginning of the evening you'll have tears in your eyes as, at your feet, your sleeping dog farts toxic fumes in concert with the snoring.

When it's midnight and all hell breaks loose, you might have to feed the dog an entire sausage within the first fifteen minutes!



Fireworks and pets simply don't mix. As far as I'm concerned, they can just get rid of this not-so-charming Dutch custom of greeting the new year with a massive barrage of fireworks and toxic fumes and missing fingers.

Our press keeps blaring the message that the worst is over and that it will soon be business as usual, but I don't buy it. I hear from many people who are currently looking for a job, that there are so many applicants for even the most menial positions that they are all but giving up!

While most of my focus is on climate change

... because I believe this could end not only us as a species, but could wipe out most life on this planet, I have not forgotten about peak oil and the economic and social drama that will produce. A combination of the two events is hurtling towards us, and I think there is not much that can be done to divert it.

This presentation of peak oil gives a good summary/prediction of what lies ahead.

There are smart people working on transition towns and the like. I hope that will suffice, but I am doubtful. But, eternal optimist, I am learning more every year about backyard vegetable gardening!

Stunned silence

I guess that's the best way of describing the post-Copenhagen feeling. Blogs are rather silent, there's a general whatthefuckjusthappened??!!?? feeling that lingers.

Though I expected nothing amazing from Copenhagen, I'm left rather stunned myself as well. But, I have come to accept that this will happen. The tidal wave is bearing down on us and like so many nightmares where you cannot move when the bogeyman comes at you, we collectively stand and do nothing.

My energy and thinking increasingly over these past years concentrates on how one can live through the next twenty-some years, and how me and mine would be able to live through the next few generations. Learning about backyard farming, for instance. Looking for that place to stay that's out of the firing lines. Developing knowledge and skills that will be useful in a changing society. Researching ways of becoming self-sufficient without drawing too much attention to it.

Like the frog that got boiled, change will come slowly even though the climate is changing faster than one would think. I only hope that humankind will actually survive this, long-term. I won't be there to see how things work out in a few hundred years, but I do hope so. For now, I doubt there is much we can still do to stop the tidal wave. It's coming up the beach already...

Het weer over 2009

Weer een warmer dan normaal jaar:

Het afgelopen jaar was warm. In De Bilt bedraagt de gemiddelde temperatuur naar schatting 10,5 graden tegen 9,8 graden normaal. Bovendien was het zeer zonnig: 2009 hoort tot de zonnigste jaren sinds de metingen begonnen in 1901. De zon scheen gemiddeld ruim 300 uur meer dan gewoonlijk. Verder viel er minder regen dan gewoonlijk.

Met de warmte heeft 2009 de trend voortgezet van de laatste jaren. Sinds 1997 waren alle dertien jaren te warm of veel te warm.

De zomer van 2009 was de negende warme zomer in successie.

Nonsens, dat global warming? Tja, over 9 jaar kan je niets zeggen. Over 13 jaar ook niet. Maar ik kan wel opmerken dat dit trend binnen de voorspellingen van de klimaatmodellen past.

Mijn voorspelling voor 2010:
Sinds oktober 2009 is El Niño in opkomst. Een El Niño doet iets meer met ons weer dan een La Niña: de waarschijnlijkheid van een natte voorjaar neemt toe. Deze El Niño zal in ieder geval tot eind voorjaar sterk blijven, dus tot begin zomer meer regen dan gebruikelijk. Zomer wordt weer warm met weer meer weer-extremen dan in de jaren 80 en 90. Tussen augustus en oktober zit ik in Amerika, dan is het weer daar natuurlijk zalig, en in Nederland een ronde nul ;-)


Copenhagen is op niks uitgedraaid. Ik had al geen hoge verwachtingen maar een totale mislukking zoals het is geworden, had ik niet voorzien. Ik heb zo'n beetje de hoop opgegeven dat we de tij nog kunnen keren. Van de minderheid van Nederlanders die überhaupt geloven in global warming, is er volgens mij een aardig aantal die zich verkneukelen op Costa Hollandia, en het niet erg vinden dat het warmer wordt. Laat de rest van de wereld maar barsten (oh wee, als de dijken het niet meer kunnen bolwerken... maar voorlopig feesten we vrolijk verder). Het zij zo.

This planet does not have a reset button

Copenhagen failed dismally. No hard targets. Nothing binding, be it CO2 emissions or financial. It's weaker than Kyoto was! I didn't expect them to come up with what is needed, but I did not expect this much of a poor result either.

There's a generation waking up to the reality of climate change and what's (not) been done about it over the past 17+ years by our leaders. They understand increasingly well how special interests and our current political system have made this almost inevitable. I believe that they are angry and getting angrier. It does not help, that they are sidelined with great force whenever they try to take part in the political process; and by the way I think the police response in Copenhagen to protesters was overwhelming, disgracefully indiscriminate and at times inexcusably violent. I never expected this from a country such as Denmark. Almost none of that was reported, it is as if there was no protest at all, in Copenhagen. Just cutesy symbols here and there.

This was a last ditch opportunity, utterly squandered. I won't be surprised if this will birth a kind of environmental & political guerrilla movement. Soon, I believe the time for protest marches and hunger strikes and logo's and coloured flags will come to an end. I really do. Throughout history, if people cannot get what they need through legitimate channels, they choose other, more violent methods.

No, it would not surprise me at all if this fiasco gives birth to a new kind of terrorism (and, how handy that our governments have all these anti-terrorism legislation already in place, and how handy that the people of these times are so nonchalant about data privacy...)

He is right: governments could move at lightning speed to save the banks, but our biosphere, that takes 17+ years and still no solution in sight.

We are moving backwards. Count me in with the angry.

The Iraq war and accountability

I have been watching the Chilcot inquiry in the UK unfold. I have been listening and reading and hearing what people said. What a craven spectacle it is!

Counter to what some politicians seem to believe, most of their constituents don't have the attention span of a gnat. I remember very well what was said and done, years ago - and to me, it does not matter that it happened many years ago. And it should not, in such matters. Many agree with this way of thinking, which is why a 90-year old Nazi criminal had to stand trial in Germany for WW2 war crimes! Even after all that time, it is just to prosecute such crimes.

If the rule of law has to mean anything, it has to be blind. These days, it is not. If people can waltz all over international laws prohibiting wars of agression and never have to be held accountable (even with this inquiry, I see Blair is going to give evidence in secret. Par for course, isn't it?), then the law itself is useless. The entire concept of democracy and a just society based in law is a joke.

This was a war of choice, Blair is increasingly open about it:

"I would still have thought it right to remove him. Obviously you would have had to use and deploy different arguments, about the nature of the threat," he said.
"I can't really think we'd be better with him and his two sons still in charge but it's incredibly difficult."

And still as unapologetic as ever.

The Independent's headline this morning read "Untouchable". Yes, it seems so. The evidence that has come out of this inquiry makes clear there was no case to go to war. Period.

I am beyond angry and disgusted. It seems there will be no consequences for anyone. No accountability. If so, I hope they will just drop the masks. I hope that when the next war of choice is started, our politicians won't bother with the horse and pony show. Just say "hey we don't like this person, so we are going to bomb the country to smithereens". And then go out and do it. I for one would at least appreciate the honesty.

I don't think he should.

This really is a storm about nothing and it's whipped up to grand proportions by those who would want Copenhagen to fail. He should not be paying the price for being the messenger of bad news. Climate scientists have been up against a concerted attack over the past years that has ever increased in ferocity. Against such sustained wilful misinformation, what do you do... how do you cope, how do you keep your message clear? I think climate scientists on the whole did an admirable job so far and none of them should not be intimidated into stepping down at this point.

Not accepting the reality of the science is wishful thinking, head in sand policy. People would rather it were not so and are in denial. This is partly why there is such a receptive audience for what clearly is a lot of hot air.

Does it matter in the end? Some say yes, but I believe it's past the point where we still can make the changes that would turn things around for us as a species. Hansen may still hope, still want to fight, but I think it's pretty useless.

Not that I'm going on a carbon binge now, understand, and I'll keep trying to spread the message, make people understand what we are facing. This is reflexive by now, I've been at it since the Club of Rome days. But, I am pretty sure I'm pissing agin' the wind here.

Huisverkopen dalen met een kwart

De verkoop van woningen is in het derde kwartaal met 23 procent gedaald vergeleken met dezelfde periode een jaar eerder. De prijs van een gemiddelde koopwoning daalde met 4,9 procent tot 229.000 euro.

Waarom moet Zalm zo nodig een bonus?

Hij verdient verdorie genoeg. Ik presteer mij een hoedje en krijg geen bonus, van mij mogen ze al die belachelijke bonussen afschaffen. OF alleen uitbetalen aan mensen die echt een heel grote inspanning verrichten.

Volgens Bos is steeds duidelijk geweest dat de bonus maximaal een half jaarsalaris kan bedragen, ofwel 375.000 euro, en afhankelijk is van de winst die bij de verkoop van ABN Amro en Fortis wordt gemaakt.

Beperking

Hij voegt er nu nadrukkelijk aan toe dat Zalm er ''slechts'' over vier jaren recht op heeft. Een verdere beperking is volgens Bos dat de bonus pas twee jaar na de verkoop van de bankencombinatie definitief wordt toegekend. ''De heer Zalm ontvangt dus louter een bonus die is gericht op de lange termijn.''

Zalm krijgt 100.000 euro bonus voor elk miljard dat de overheid straks verdient op de verkoop van ABN Amro en Fortis.

Prijsdaling gaat door

De prijzen op de huizenmarkt blijven dalen. In augustus werd voor bestaande koopwoningen gemiddeld 5,6 procent minder betaald dan in diezelfde maand van het vorige jaar.

Dit blijkt uit cijfers van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) en het Kadaster die maandag zijn gepubliceerd.

Alle typen koopwoningen waren vorige maand goedkoper dan een jaar geleden. Vrijstaande woningen daalden met 7 procent het meest in prijs. Tussenwoningen gingen 4,6 procent in prijs naar beneden.

In alle provincies gingen de prijzen naar beneden, maar er zijn onderling wel verschillen. in Zeeland was de prijsdaling met 2,1 procent het kleinst, in Groningen met 7,8 procent het grootst.

De bestbetaalde bankiers zijn in 2008 niet of nauwelijks gekort op hun bonussen, ondanks de grote verliezen die de banken leden.

Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek van De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), dat de beloningen bij 27 financiële instellingen in 2007 en 2008 bekeek.

DNB noemt het 'opmerkelijk' dat er bonussen zijn toegekend in bedrijven die in 2008 zware verliezen moesten incasseren.


Topmannen die meer dan 1,5 miljoen euro per jaar verdienen, kregen vorig jaar een bonus van gemiddeld 311 procent van hun salaris.

In 2007 was dat nog 355 procent. Werknemers met een salaris van 100.000 tot 200.000 euro ontvingen in 2008 gemiddeld 11 procent aan bonus. Het jaar ervoor was dat nog 30 procent.

I hope some justice will prevail even if the victims have been suddenly compensated when it became evident the truth was coming out (liberally tossing out threats and legal actions to muzzle the news organisations who were publishing the proof):

Trafigura said the deal – for an undisclosed amount – was likely to be acceptable to most if not all of the claimants. It was based on an acceptance that the company had no liability for the most serious deaths and injuries alleged in the dumping scandal. Trafigura says it is the world's third-biggest private oil trader, and declared a $440m profit last year. Its 200 traders are reported to receive annual bonuses of up to $1m each.

Hier maak je mij en nog veel andere fietsers heel blij mee.
Meer fietspaden, minder oponthoud, meer veilige stalling op verstandige plaatsen (bij tram haltes bijvoorbeeld) en dan nog ook iets doen aan de diefstal! Als dat allemaal zou lukken... ik hoop het!!

Fietsers moeten op steeds meer fietspaden gewoon door kunnen trappen, zonder hinder van hobbels, boomstronken en verkeerslichten.

De komende jaren moet het aantal 'fietssnelwegen' verdubbelen. Daarvoor trekt staatssecretaris Tineke Huizinga (Verkeer) de komende jaren 25 miljoen euro uit. Dat schrijft zij zaterdag in een brief aan de Tweede Kamer.

Daarin ontvouwt zij plannen om Nederland nog meer op de fiets te krijgen. Er zijn al vijf fietssnelwegen, in de regio's Arnhem-Nijmegen en Den Haag Leiden zijn plannen bijna klaar.

Werkeloosheid stijgt

Werkloosheid nadert de 5 procent

* In een jaar tijd werkloosheid 78 duizend hoger
* Meer dan driekwart van de stijging voor rekening van de mannen

In de periode mei-juli 2009 waren gemiddeld 386 duizend personen werkloos. Dit komt overeen met 4,9 procent van de beroepsbevolking. Een jaar eerder was dit nog 4,0 procent. Op dit moment ligt de werkloosheid ongeveer op hetzelfde niveau als begin 2007. Dit blijkt uit de nieuwste cijfers van het CBS.

De voor seizoen gecorrigeerde werkloosheid kwam in de periode mei-juli 2009 uit op 371 duizend personen. Dit is gelijk aan de voorgaande driemaandsperiode. Vanwege het steekproefkarakter van de cijfers is het beter om de ontwikkeling over een wat langere periode te bekijken. In het afgelopen halfjaar steeg de werkloosheid met gemiddeld ongeveer 11 duizend per maand.

Het aantal werklozen is 78 duizend hoger dan in dezelfde periode een jaar eerder. Iets meer dan driekwart van deze toename deed zich voor bij de mannen. In alle leeftijdsgroepen nam de werkloosheid onder mannen sterker toe dan onder vrouwen. Bij de jongeren (15-24 jaar) kwam de stijging zelfs vrijwel geheel voor rekening van de mannen.

Hypotheken betalen met overheidsgeld

Het moet nu niet nog gekker worden!!!

Dankzij een subsidie van 100.000 euro zal de gemeente Zuidhorn de hypotheek van 25 kopers van een kavel een tijdje betalen. Door deze tegemoetkoming bij hun hypotheek hoopt de gemeente twijfelaars over de streep te trekken.

De subsidie van 100.000 euro van het Ministerie van Volkshuisvesting, Ruimtelijke Ordening en Milieubeheer (VROM) is bedoeld om het nieuwbouwproject De Oostergast in de gemeente Zuidhorn te stimuleren. Doordat de gemeente de hypotheek enige tijd betaald hoopt men twijfelaars over de streep te halen.

Dat zijn potverdorie mijn belastingcenten, die regelrecht in anderman's portemonee gestopt worden... en daar ben ik het helemaal niet mee eens. Betaalt ons overheid, dus mijn medeburgers, maar één cent van mijn huur? Dacht het niet!!! Ik zit in een huurhuis omdat ik een koopwoning niet kan betalen. Correctie, ik kan best wel een betaalbare koopwoning vinden, maar ik vind de prijzen zo opgeklopt dat ik het niet waard vind om mijn geld hierin te stoppen. Ik gebruik m.i. gezond verstand en wordt hier niet voor beloond. Anderen die financieel onverantwoordelijk leven, krijgen nog een handje toe.

Failissementen

Het aantal bedrijven in Nederland dat in het eerste halfjaar over de kop ging, is meer dan verdubbeld tot 3500, vergeleken met dezelfde periode een jaar eerder. Het aantal failliet verklaarde particulieren lag 16 procent hoger dan een jaar eerder en kwam uit op 1800.

Van Lanschot Bankiers leidt zware verlies

een indicator dat het nog lang niet over is, ookal juichen de beursprofeten nog hoe hard...

Van Lanschot Bankiers heeft in het eerste halfjaar van 2009 een verlies geleden van 46,3 miljoen euro. In dezelfde periode een jaar eerder boekte de bank voor vermogende particulieren en familiebedrijven nog een winst van dik 60 miljoen euro.

Van Lanschot maakte de bedrijfscijfers dinsdag bekend. Het verlies komt grotendeels doordat Van Lanschot enkele eenmalige tegenvallers had, zoals afschrijvingen op een it-project ter waarde van 34,5 miljoen euro. Ook zette Van Lanschot geld opzij voor een eerder aangekondigde reorganisatie.

Toch valt het verlies veel groter uit dan verwacht. Dat komt doordat Van Lanschot 50,6 miljoen euro heeft toegevoegd aan de kredietvoorzieningen, ofwel de zogenoemde stroppenpot.

Dat geld zet de bank alvast opzij omdat de verwachting is dat het hier om leningen gaat die niet kunnen worden terugbetaald.

Recessie

''We zitten in een forse recessie, die mogelijk heftiger en dieper gaat worden dan we in Nederland denken. De hoop is natuurlijk dat deze korter wordt dan gevreesd. Hoe dan ook is het zo dat het vullen van de stroppenpot momenteel groter is dan we bij Van Lanschot gewend zijn'', stelde Floris Deckers, bestuursvoorzitter van de bank.

2010, a long hot season?

So, over the next few months, there may be increased drought in Africa, India and Australia, heavier rainfall in South America and increased extremes in Britain, of warm and cold. It may make 2010 one of the hottest years on record.

An El Niño is defined by ocean surface temperatures rising by more than 0.5C above the average.

This El Niño is well beyond that, says the Climate Prediction Center of the US National Weather Service. "Sea surface temperatures remain +0.5 to +1.5 above average across much of the equatorial Pacific Ocean," the centre reported last week. "Observations and dynamical model forecasts indicate El Niño conditions will continue to intensify and are expected to last through the northern hemisphere winter of 2009-10."

Alimentatie betalingen steeds later, of helemaal niet

Ouders betalen steeds later of helemaal niet alimentatie voor hun kinderen. Het Landelijke Bureau Inning Onderhoudsbijdragen (LBIO) heeft dit jaar ongeveer 20 procent meer verzoeken tot inning van alimentatie gekregen.

Dat zegt Leo de Bakker, directeur van het LBIO zaterdag in het Financieel Dagblad.

De stijging van het aantal verzoeken om ouders tot betaling te dwingen, komt voor een groot deel door de economische crisis, zegt hij in de krant.

LUXEMBURG - De werkloosheid in de eurozone is in juni opgelopen naar de hoogste stand in tien jaar. In juni zat 9,4 procent van de beroepsbevolking zonder baan.

In mei was dat nog 9,3 procent. Dat maakte het Europees statistisch bureau Eurostat vrijdag bekend.

Analisten gingen er van uit dat de werkloosheid zou oplopen tot 9,7 procent in de eurozone. In juni vorig jaar was 7,5 procent van de beroepsbevolking in de zestien landen die de euro hebben ingevoerd werkloos.


In alle 27 landen van de Europese Unie had in juni 8,9 procent van de beroepsbevolking geen baan. In mei was dat 8,8 procent. De stand van juni is de hoogste in vier jaar.

Het ergste moet nog komen. Wereldwijd bereikt de economische crisis begin volgend jaar pas het dieptepunt. Halverwege 2010 wordt herstel verwacht.

Dat concludeert het strategisch adviesbureau Roland Berger op basis van onderzoek onder 4600 directeuren en managers van bedrijven over de hele wereld.

De financiële problemen zijn nog niet voorbij en met name in West-Europa lijken nog meer gedwongen ontslagen te gaan vallen.

Bestuurders verwachten dat wereldwijd de economie nog met 4 procent afneemt. Het adviesbureau denkt dat de economie halverwege 2010 enige vorm van herstel zal vertonen.

Pessimistischer

Bestuurders in Groot-Brittannië en Centraal- en Oost-Europa zijn pessimistischer. Zij denken dat het dieptepunt pas halverwege 2010 ligt.

Amerikaanse en Aziatische bestuurders verwachten daarentegen al tegen het einde van dit jaar een economische opleving.

AMSTERDAM - De gemiddelde prijs van een woning is met 3,6 procent gezakt, in vergelijking met een jaar geleden. In 65 gemeenten zijn de prijzen met meer dan 5 procent gedaald. Met name de huizenprijzen in ’t Gooi hebben te lijden onder de crisis.

De gemiddelde prijs voor een woning ligt momenteel op 249.000 euro, voor een eengezinswoning is dat 270.000 euro en een appartement 188.000 euro.

Dat betekent een daling in waarde van respectievelijk 3,6 en 3,8 procent. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van ABF Valuation.


Eengezinswoningen

De eengezinswoningen zijn in ’t Gooi met 15,7 procent in prijs gezakt. Blaricum is daarbij het zwaarst getroffen; de huizenprijzen zijn daar met 18,5 procent gedaald.

Ook andere dorpen in ’t Gooi hebben te lijden: Naarden (-15,3 procent), Bussum (-14,6 procent), Laren (-14,4 procent) en Huizen (-13,5 procent).

Haarlem

In Haarlem daalden de prijzen met 12,7 procent. IJmond (-11,9 procent) en Den Haag (-11,8 procent) staan ook in de lijst van gemeentes waar de prijzen met meer dan tien procent gedaald zijn.

Den Haag is ook terug te vinden in de lijst met de grootste waardedalingen van appartementen, namelijk bovenaan met 14,4 procent, Leiden volgt met 11,7 procent.

In de provincies Friesland, Drenthe en Overijssel daalde de woningprijs met minder dan 1 procent.

Verkopen

Het aantal woningverkopen is ook gedaald; ruim 35 duizend woningen veranderden in het tweede kwartaal van eigenaar tegenover 56 duizend in dezelfde periode in 2008. Ten opzichte van het eerste kwartaal van 2009 is er wel een lichte verbetering te zien.

Autofabrikanten hebben het moeilijk

De Franse autoproducent Renault is door de economische recessie diep in de rode cijfers terechtgekomen.

Het concern leed een nettoverlies over de eerste helft van het jaar van 2,71 miljard euro vergeleken met een winst van 1,58 miljard in dezelfde periode een jaar eerder. Dat heeft de op een na grootste autoproducent in Frankrijk donderdag bekendgemaakt.

De omzet van de producent van modellen als de Clio, Laguna en de Megane, kelderde met bijna een kwart tot 15,99 miljard euro, conform de verwachting van analisten.

Het verlies is echter een stuk groter dan verwacht.

Boven verwachting van analisten: oliemaatschappijen

Winst BP is gehalveerd:

De Britse oliegigant BP heeft in het tweede kwartaal 53 procent minder winst geboekt. Het concern behaalde een nettowinst van 4,39 miljard dollar (2,82 miljard euro) tegen 9,36 miljard dollar een jaar eerder.

Dat heeft BP dinsdag bekendgemaakt. De winstval is veroorzaakt door lagere olie- en gasprijzen en lagere winstmarges op raffinage.

En met Shell gaat het ook niet goed. Door de olieprijs, he.

De nettowinst op basis van geschatte actuele kosten daalde in het afgelopen kwartaal tot 2,34 miljard dollar.

Dat is 70 procent minder dan een jaar eerder, toen nog een winst werd geboekt van 7,9 miljard dollar. De omzet van het grootste olieconcern van Europa zakte met 51 procent tot 63,88 miljard dollar.

AMSTERDAM - Supermarktconcern Ahold heeft wederom een goed kwartaal achter de rug, maar de behaalde omzet is wel lager dan door analisten was verwacht.

Het moederbedrijf van onder meer Albert Heijn zag de omzet in het tweede kwartaal met 11,5 procent stijgen.

Zonder effecten van wisselkoersen steeg de omzet met 3,9 procent, zo bleek uit de dinsdag gepubliceerde kwartaalcijfers.

De totale omzet bedroeg 6,4 miljard euro tegen 5,78 miljard euro een jaar eerder. Analisten waren uitgegaan van een gemiddelde totale omzet van 6,55 miljard euro (met verwachtingen tussen de 6,48 tot 6,65 miljard euro).

Toename faillissementsverkopen

Het aantal faillissementsverkopen bij veilinghuis Troostwijk is sinds het begin van het jaar met 65 procent toegenomen.

And then the "old Europe", that's not much better. For instance, just look at Italy and that dictatorish clown Berlusconi... I'm not sure one could even call that a democracy any more. And they will have a major say in what happens in my country? This too, is unacceptable.

There's of course good as well as bad in all countries but dammit we are all different and so we should stay!!! My country's not perfect but I want US to be the stewards in how we develop and not a huge congealed heap of shoved together, unrelated states. I do not like, no, that's too weak: I am fucking furious that this is happening, that this excuse for a democratic government of mine pushed the Lisbon treaty European constitution through, against the wishes of the people. Why do you think Geert Wilders is winning so many votes in the Netherlands? This is one of the top reasons: he is outspokenly, rudely against a federal Europe. In that, we agree.

More than any of the other candidates, I expected of Obama that he would put an end to Guantanamo and the dubious tribunals that are such an offense to the sense of justice and human rights. Especially since it comes from America, who always put themselves up there as bastion of freedom...

This is a very deep disappointment.
A man of law, I had very high expectations.

He let himself down, he let his country down, he let down many people all over the world who pinned their hopes on the new broom sweeping clean all the abuses and excesses of the Bush era.

It makes no difference to me that the defendants now have a slightly improved legal protection. The entire process is flawed and should have been eliminated down to the last detail.

I expected better of him.

Obama has disappointed me!

I say put it all out in the open, of this wound will fester forever.



The argument he used, that this was done to protect soldiers overseas in dangerous regions, and that the pictures will be released when this threat is gone, does not hold water. Any fool can see that Americans will remain in these trouble spots indefinitely, probably even spreading out like an oil stain as the production of oil peaks, and huge displacement of populations start due to climate change messing up their climate and food/water sources. To me, at least, this is blindingly obvious. A country does not build up such a huge military machine and then leave soldiers in barracks and weapons rusting in storage. The logical thing is to employ them to protect your own interests. This is what will happen, barring a social or physical disaster akin to the yucatán meteorite.

Eurozone diving into recession

like watching a trainwreck.
with things so volatile, it's hard to say what effect it will have on me personally.
i still have a job, so technically, for now, it will be okay.
but with increasing numbers unemployed, using community money, will leave less funds for other issues that also need attention. i think there is going to be quite a squeeze. i also don't know if there will be a recovery anywhere soon. doubtless it will not rebound as fast as it fell.

for now, i'm watching with a fair bit of horror, as our world implodes around us.

Sixteen eurozone nations suffer a 4.6 per cent fall in GDP in the first quarter

A "disastrous" contraction in the Germany economy of 3.8 per cent in the first months of this year, equivalent to more than 15 per cent on an annualised basis, has dragged the eurozone into a deep recession. German GDP is down 6.9 per cent on this time last year; the 16-nation eurozone 4.6 per cent lower.

Europese autoverkoop 11,9 procent omlaag

De autoverkopen in de Europese Unie zijn in april 11,9 procent gedaald. Nederland scoort met een min van 27,9 dus bovengemiddeld slecht.

De Nederlandse economie heeft in het eerste kwartaal een ongekende krimp beleefd.

De teruggang bedroeg 4,5 procent, zo blijkt vrijdag uit de nieuwste cijfers van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS).

Vooral de export en de investeringen liepen heel fors terug. De consumptie van huishoudens was voor het eerst in jaren lager. De overheidsbestedingen namen nog wel toe.

Daling vacatures zet onverminderd door

Het aantal vacatures in Nederland is in het eerste kwartaal met bijna 50.000 gedaald ten opzichte van het laatste kwartaal van 2008.

Eind maart stonden 152.000 vacatures open meldde het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek vrijdag.

De daling is ongeveer even groot als in het vierde kwartaal van vorig jaar. Daarmee is het aantal vacatures in een half jaar tijd met bijna 40 procent teruggelopen. Dat komt neer op 100.000 vacatures minder.

Economie eurozone met 2,5 procent gekrompen

De economie van de eurozone is in het eerste kwartaal van dit jaar met 2,5 procent gekrompen in vergelijking met het voorgaande kwartaal. Ten opzichte van een jaar eerder ging de economie met 4,6 procent achteruit.

Dat blijkt uit een voorlopige schatting van het Europees statistisch bureau Eurostat die vrijdag werd gepubliceerd.

Omzet industrie gedaald

De ondernemers in de industrie behaalden in maart 20 procent minder omzet dan een jaar eerder, meldt het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS). In het buitenland werd 23 procent minder omgezet, op de binnenlandse markt 15 procent. In februari was de omzet 27 procent lager.

De afname van de omzet in maart is voor ruim de helft toe te schrijven aan lagere afzetprijzen.

De aardolie-, chemische, rubber- en kunststofproductenindustrie kende met 34 procent de grootste teruggang. De voedings- en genotmiddelenindustrie deed het met 5 procent minder omzet relatief het beste.

Productie eurozone opnieuw gedaald

De industriële productie in de eurozone is in maart weer gekrompen. Het was de zevende maand op rij dat de productie afnam. Dit maakte het Europees statistisch bureau Eurostat woensdag bekend.

De krimp bedroeg in maart 2 procent ten opzichte van februari. In vergelijking met maart 2008 werd er 20,2 procent minder geproduceerd.

Huizenkoper stelt aankoop uit

Ik ben ook eentje dat de aankoop nog even uitstelt.
Ik kan het wel betalen, maar ik vind de prijzen nog veels te hoog.
Nog een halfjaar tot jaar, dan ga ik serieus op zoek naar een koopwoning!

Mensen die op zoek zijn naar een nieuwe woning, stellen de aankoop nog even uit.

Volgens TNS Nipo waren vorig jaar 246.000 Nederlanders actief bezig met een hypotheek voor de aankoop van een nieuwe woning. Het blijkt dat de helft (51 procent) van hen de koop van een nieuwe woning heeft uitgesteld, omdat ze verwachten dat de prijzen op de woningmarkt verder zullen dalen. 53 Procent geeft aan dat men vanuit financieel oogpunt nog even in de huidige woning wil blijven wonen.

Voor 76.000 mensen die een huis zoeken, is de beoogde woning niet meer binnen bereik als gevolg van de financiële crisis. Het bedrag dat aan hypotheek wordt verstrekt is zo omlaag gegaan dat ze dat huis niet meer kunnen betalen.

Van de 246.000 huishoudens die zich oriënteerden op een hypotheek, heeft ongeveer de helft (117.000) ook een offerte aangevraagd. Als reden waarom er nog niet daadwerkelijk een hypotheek is afgesloten, zegt een kwart dat dit komt door de huidige situatie op de woningmarkt.

42 Procent geeft aan nog bezig zijn te zoeken of beslissen. 15 Procent zegt dat de huidige woning nog niet is verkocht, voor 11 procent ligt de beoogde woning boven het budget.

Brabant en Zeeland dieper in de crisis

Meer dan de helft van de bedrijven in de provincies Zeeland en Brabant is getroffen door de economische recessie. Ruim driekwart van de bedrijven boekt omzetverliezen.

Dat blijkt uit een enquête die de regionale kranten in Brabant en Zeeland, op initiatief van het Brabants Dagblad, hebben gehouden onder de leden van de Brabants Zeeuwse Werkgeversvereniging.

Uit eerdere enquêtes bleek dat in november 2008 nog geen kwart van de ondernemers last hadden van de crisis. In januari was dit 40 procent en nu dus ruim 50.

Ook blijkt uit het onderzoek dat 60 procent van de ondervraagden minder opdrachten krijgt en steeds meer bedrijven vast personeel moeten ontslaan. De metaal- en bouwsector is het hardst getroffen.

Positiever

Ondanks deze negatieve cijfers zijn ondernemers positiever gestemd dan een aantal maanden geleden. Het aantal ondernemers dat een langdurige recessie verwacht is met de helft afgenomen van ruim 50 procent eind januari naar 25 procent nu.

Aantal faillissementen stijgt explosief

Het aantal faillissementen stijgt explosief, meldt het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS). In maart werden ruim 670 bedrijven en instellingen, eenmanszaken niet meegeteld, failliet verklaard.

Dit waren er ruim 130 meer dan in februari dit jaar. Bovendien waren het er 410 meer dan dan in maart vorig jaar. Zo'n grote toename heeft zich niet eerder voorgedaan, aldus het CBS.

Het voortschrijdend driemaandsgemiddelde kwam in maart uit op 560, tegen 476 in februari. Het is de hoogste stand sinds het CBS begin jaren tachtig met de meting begon.

Vooral de laatste maanden is het aantal faillissementen explosief gestegen. In minder dan een jaar tijd is het driemaandsgemiddelde ruimschoots verdubbeld.

Fractieleider Arie Slob van regeringspartij ChristenUnie wil dat op openbare scholen naast de evolutietheorie van Darwin ook het scheppingsverhaal wordt onderwezen. Dat zegt hij in een vraaggesprek met NU.nl.

“Alsof er geen andere theorieën en ideeën bestaan. Er zijn meer opvattingen over het begin van deze aarde dan alleen maar die ene die nu toevallig zwart op wit in de lesboeken wordt afgedrukt", aldus Slob.

De oud-docent vindt dat er breder geïnformeerd moet worden. “Dat is een boodschap aan zowel het christelijke als aan het openbare onderwijs.”

Ik zou nog een stap verder willen gaan: ik zou willen dat onderwijzers, die dit soort nonsens als wetenschap verkopen aan onschuldige kinderen, verplicht worden ontslaan. Geloof en bijgeloof hoort niet op scholen, en zeker niet in een wetenschapsvak.

Persbericht kredietverzekeraar Euler Hermes

het is nog lang niet over. de wereldexport daalt in 2009 naar het laagste niveau sinds 1945, volgens de verzekeraar.

In Nederland ziet de kredietverzekeraar een toename van het aantal faillissementen met 32% in het eerste kwartaal 2009 ten opzichte van het laatste kwartaal van 2008. De stijging is 85% in vergelijking met het 1e kwartaal in 2008.

Voorlopig geen stabilisatie
Een stabilisatie van de economie vindt op zijn vroegst in het derde kwartaal van dit jaar plaats. Het verminderen van de wereldwijde crisis in de tweede helft van 2009 blijft mogelijk als de kredietverlening weer regelmatig wordt. Daarnaast spelen productieafname, toenemende werkloosheid en daling in export een grote rol.

Lastig jaar voor Corus

Het lopende jaar wordt ''best wel lastig'' voor staalconcern Corus. Marjan Oudeman, lid van de raad van bestuur van het concern zei dit zondag in het televisieprogramma Buitenhof. Oudeman zei dat het concern kijkt om opnieuw werktijdverkorting aan te vragen.

Door de wereldwijde neergang is de vraag naar staal flink teruggelopen. Het bedrijf, het voormalige Hoogovens en sinds 2007 in handen van het Indiase Tata, sloot een van de twee Hoogovens en vroeg werktijdverkorting aan voor zijn werknemers.

Bovendien gaat Corus achthonderd banen schrappen in Nederland. Of er nog meer banen op de tocht staan, werd in het gesprek niet duidelijk.

Ook beurzen Europa omhoog na uitslag stresstest

Acties bij Hema voorlopig opgeschort

Vakbond FNV Bondgenoten heeft eerder aangekondigde acties bij detailhandelsconcern Hema voorlopig opgeschort. Het personeel voelt zich door de economische crisis te kwetsbaar om harde acties te voeren.

Daarom legt de bond komende week het laatste eindbod van Hema voor een nieuwe cao opnieuw aan zijn leden voor.

Toyota voorziet recordverlies

Autofabrikant Toyota Motor, bekend van de Prius hybride-auto, voorziet een groot verlies voor dit boekjaar, zo maakte de Japanse onderneming vrijdag bekend.

De autogigant boekte in het laatste kwartaal van zijn gebroken boekjaar een operationeel verlies van 682 miljard yen (5,1 miljard euro).

Volgens Toyota komt het verlies dit jaar uit op 850 milard yen (6,4 miljard euro). De cijfers zijn slechter dan analisten hadden verwacht.

Nederlands bedrijfsleven somber gestemd

Het Nederlandse bedrijfsleven is somber gestemd over de economische vooruitzichten dit jaar. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek dat TNS NIPO elk kwartaal uitvoert onder drieduizend bedrijven.

De omzetverwachting voor 2009 ligt flink lager dan vorig jaar. Dezelfde bedrijven denken eveneens eind dit jaar minder werknemers in dienst te zullen hebben dan eind vorig jaar.

Het aantal bedrijven dat verwacht minder omzet te realiseren dan het jaar ervoor, is in twee jaar tijd verdubbeld: van 15 naar 30 procent. Ruim een kwart van de bedrijven verwacht nog wel groei.


Groei

In het eerste kwartaal van 2007 verwachtte nog de helft van de Nederlandse bedrijven dat jaar meer omzet te draaien dan het jaar ervoor. Een kwart dacht zelfs aan een groei van 10 procent of meer.

De Nederlandse hypotheekmarkt heeft in het eerste kwartaal zijn omzet zien dalen met meer dan 36 procent tot 14,2 miljard euro. Het aantal afgesloten hypotheken is bijna even hard afgenomen, zo blijkt uit cijfers van adviesbureau IG & H Consulting & Interim.

Reden voor de sterke omzetdaling is volgens het adviesbureau het stilvallen van de huizenmarkt. Na jarenlang oplopende hypotheekbedragen, is er nu bovendien sprake van een daling van de gemiddelde koopsom.

Europese vakbonden verwerpen bevriezing loon

De Europese federatie van vakbonden ETUC wil dringend gecoördineerde actie van de EU-landen tegen de snel stijgende werkloosheid. De bonden eisen meer overheidsinvesteringen en verwerpen pleidooien van werkgevers voor loonbevriezing.

Zonder loonsverhoging daalt de koopkracht en verergert de recessie, aldus de bonden.

De vakbonden, werkgevers en EU-toppolitici zijn donderdag in Praag begonnen aan topberaad over de groeiende werkloosheid in de EU. Naar verwachting stijgt die binnen een jaar van 9 naar 11 procent, zodat ruim 26 miljoen Europeanen zonder werk thuis zitten.

Meer Nederlanders op vakantie in eigen land

Ongeveer 8 miljoen Nederlanders zijn van plan om komende zomer op vakantie te gaan naar het buitenland. Dat zijn er een kwart miljoen minder dan vorig jaar. Dat blijkt donderdag uit een onderzoek van NBTC-NIPO Research.

De belangstelling voor een vakantie in eigen land is 4 procent gestegen. Nederland is komende zomer de vakantiebestemming voor zo'n 2,7 miljoen mensen.

Meer mensen bezorgd om baan

Meer mensen maken zich zorgen over het behoud van hun baan. Eind vorig jaar waren dat ruim één miljoen werknemers, ofwel achttien procent van de beroepsbevolking.

Dat is een stijging van twee procentpunt ten opzichte van de circa zestien procent van eind 2007, blijkt uit de donderdag gepresenteerde Nationale Enquête Arbeidsomstandigheden 2008.

Curing cancer

The outlook, after so many years, so much money into research, is still very bleak. Basically, if you have metastatic cancer you will always lose the race.

Yet the death rate for cancer, adjusted for the size and age of the population, dropped only 5 percent from 1950 to 2005. In contrast, the death rate for heart disease dropped 64 percent in that time, and for flu and pneumonia, it fell 58 percent.

Still, the perception, fed by the medical profession and its marketers, and by popular sentiment, is that cancer can almost always be prevented. If that fails, it can usually be treated, even beaten.

The good news is that many whose cancer has not spread do well, as they have in the past. In some cases, like early breast cancer, drugs introduced in the past decade have made an already good prognosis even better. And a few rare cancers, like chronic myeloid leukemia, can be controlled for years with new drugs. Cancer treatments today tend to be less harsh. Surgery is less disfiguring, chemotherapy less disabling.

But difficulties arise when cancer spreads, and, often, it has by the time of diagnosis. That is true for the most common cancers as well as rarer ones.

With breast cancer, for example, only 20 percent with metastatic disease — cancer that has spread outside the breast, like to bones, brain, lungs or liver — live five years or more, barely changed since the war on cancer began.

With colorectal cancer, only 10 percent with metastatic disease survive five years. That number, too, has hardly changed over the past four decades. The number has long been about 30 percent for metastatic prostate cancer, and in the single digits for lung cancer.

As for prevention, progress has been agonizingly slow. Only a very few things — stopping smoking, for example — make a difference. And despite marketing claims to the contrary, rigorous studies of prevention methods like high-fiber or low-fat diets, or vitamins or selenium, have failed to find an effect.

And for all the money poured into cancer research, there has never been enough for innovative studies, the kind that can fundamentally change the way scientists understand cancer or doctors treat it. Such studies are risky, less likely to work than ones that are more incremental. The result is that, with limited money, innovative projects often lose out to more reliably successful projects that aim to tweak treatments, perhaps extending life by only weeks.

“Actually, that is the biggest threat,” said Dr. Robert C. Young, chancellor of the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. “Every organization says, ‘Oh, we want to fund high-risk research.’ And I think they mean it. But as a matter of fact, they don’t do it.”

Yet the grim facts about cancer can be lost among the positive messages from the news media, advocacy groups and medical centers, and even labels on foods and supplements, hinting that they can fight or prevent cancer. The words tend to be carefully couched, but their impression is unmistakable and welcomed: cancer is preventable if you just eat right and exercise. If you are screened regularly, cancers can be caught early and almost certainly will be cured. If by some awful luck, your cancer is potentially deadly, miraculous new treatments and more in the pipeline could cure you or turn your cancer into a manageable disease.

Unfortunately, as many with cancer have learned, the picture is not always so glowing.

Sacked for talking to the media about climate change??

A scientist of such stature?

Surely not? Surely, New Zealand is not so backward in these issues? Surely they would not sack someone after 27 years without even so much as a warning???

Leading Government scientist Jim Salinger, an international pioneer in climate change research, has been sacked for what he says is talking out of turn to news organisations.

Dr Salinger, 62, says he was summarily dismissed from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa) at 4pm on Thursday, and given three and a half hours to clear out his Auckland office.

He told the Weekend Herald he received no formal written warnings leading to his dismissal, which followed a 27-year career as a Government scientist, and no criticism of his work.

Dr Salinger claims the information he provided included calling television weatherman Jim Hickey from Greymouth last week to let him know the rivers were in flood.

His work helped an international group of scientists to which he belongs, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, share the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 with former United States Vice-President Al Gore.

Dr Salinger, whose postgraduate studies in 1975 produced what later came to be regarded as a watershed paper on climate change at a time when the concept was resisted by most scientists, is also a Companion of the Royal Society and heads the World Commission for Agricultural Meteorology.

Good on the Israeli soldiers who stand up and speak out, tell what actually happened.
Because even if the Red Cross, journalists, politicians, civilians, film and photographs prove otherwise, it apparently only becomes true when the Israeli soldiers themselves say so.

The lives of Palestinians, let's say, is something very, very less important than the lives of our soldiers.

and when you read what some Israeli soldiers put on their t-shirts, it goes beyond shock...

Dead babies, mothers weeping on their children's graves, a gun aimed at a child and bombed-out mosques - these are a few examples of the images Israel Defense Forces soldiers design these days to print on shirts they order to mark the end of training, or of field duty. The slogans accompanying the drawings are not exactly anemic either: A T-shirt for infantry snipers bears the inscription "Better use Durex," next to a picture of a dead Palestinian baby, with his weeping mother and a teddy bear beside him. A sharpshooter's T-shirt from the Givati Brigade's Shaked battalion shows a pregnant Palestinian woman with a bull's-eye superimposed on her belly, with the slogan, in English, "1 shot, 2 kills." A "graduation" shirt for those who have completed another snipers course depicts a Palestinian baby, who grows into a combative boy and then an armed adult, with the inscription, "No matter how it begins, we'll put an end to it."

There are also plenty of shirts with blatant sexual messages. For example, the Lavi battalion produced a shirt featuring a drawing of a soldier next to a young woman with bruises, and the slogan, "Bet you got raped!" A few of the images underscore actions whose existence the army officially denies - such as "confirming the kill" (shooting a bullet into an enemy victim's head from close range, to ensure he is dead), or harming religious sites, or female or child non-combatants.

That they consider this okay, make excuses for it, actually have these things printed and wear them, shows how far gone they are down the road of abandoning all concept of justice, equality and human rights.

The world's best efforts at combating climate change are likely to offer no more than a 50-50 chance of keeping temperature rises below the threshold of disaster, according to research from the UK Met Office.

The key aim of holding the expected increase to 2C, beyond which damage to the natural world and to human society is likely to be catastrophic, is far from assured, the research suggests, even if all countries engage forthwith in a radical and enormous crash programme to slash greenhouse gas emissions – something which itself is by no means guaranteed.

The chilling forecast from the supercomputer climate model of the Met Office's Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research will provide a sobering wake-up call for governments around the world, who will begin formally negotiating three weeks today the new international treaty on tackling global warming, which is due to be signed in Copenhagen in December.

Bij 90 procent van de autoreizen duurt de reis met het openbaar vervoer van deur tot deur meer dan twee keer zo lang, ook in de spits.

Dat concluderen het Centraal Planbureau (CPB) en het Kennisinstituut voor Mobiliteitsbeleid (KiM) in een rapport over de kosten en baten van het openbaar vervoer.

3. Peaking oil production, because... well, there simply is no more to pump up. This might be masked somewhat by the economic crisis, but at some point it will become glaringly obvious.

The BBC leaves me stunned

Simply gobsmacked!

The BBC has refused to broadcast a national humanitarian appeal for Gaza, leaving aid agencies with a potential shortfall of millions of pounds in donations.

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), an umbrella organisation for 13 aid charities, launched its appealtoday saying the devastation in Gaza was "so huge that British aid agencies were compelled to act".

But the BBC made a rare breach of an agreement dating back to 1963 when it announced it would not give free airtime to the appeal. Other broadcasters then followed suit. Previously, broadcasters have agreed on the video and script to be used with the DEC, with each station choosing a presenter to front the appeal, shown after primetime news bulletins.

The BBC said it was not the first time broadcasters had refused to show a DEC appeal.

The corporation said it had been concerned about the difficulties of getting aid through to victims in a volatile situation. The BBC, which has faced criticism in the past over alleged bias in its coverage of the Middle East, said it did not want to risk public confidence in its impartiality.

European freedom of speech

Yesterday, the Netherlands made headlines with the Amsterdam court verdict that Geert Wilders, a rightwing Dutch MP, has to face trial for hate speech.

This is the truth - we do not have real freedom of speech in Europe, in many countries there are hate speech laws. Considering our recent collective past however, that is not so surprising. I consider this a useful tool that should be very sparingly and judiciously used. In this instance, it would have been better to engage in spirited public debate instead of prosecution in a court of law. In my opinion, this does not warrant prosecution.

Today my attention was caught by a blog cataloguing a far more grievous freedom of speech issues, in one of our new EU countries, Latvia, in November 2008 (I expect it's ongoing still).

I find it shocking. Shocking that this is one of the EU and NATO member countries (since 2004), one who also has a voice in how the rest of Europe is governed.
(In my opinion, in a mad dash to expand, far too many countries were granted admission far too quickly. This only serves to strengthen my opinion. )

This is also a freedom of speech issue but while the first -which I hesitantly approve of- is intended to prevent hate crimes, the second seems to be designed mainly for repression.

I could go through the EU countries one at a time and find similar issues.
The right of free speech is still a far too rare jewel in Europe, no matter what treaties we sign. Looking at the actions of the EU towards Ireland, France and the Netherlands of late (the latter two with enthusiastic co-operation of their leaders) regarding the European Constitution Treaty, I would say we are moving back towards more repressive times, and not enlightenment, prosperity and freedom.

De ambtelijke top van het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken heeft in 2003 een kritisch juridisch advies over de politieke steun aan de Irak-oorlog weggehouden bij de minister.

In een geheim memorandum van 29 april 2003 stelt de Directie Juridische Zaken (DJZ) van het departement dat de juridische onderbouwing van het standpunt van het toenmalige kabinet-Balkenende „zowel materieel als procedureel tekort” schiet (punt 16 in memorandum). De juristen schatten zelfs in „dat Nederland een eventuele procedure voor het Internationaal Gerechtshof hierover zou verliezen” (punt 9).

De toenmalige secretaris-generaal (SG) van het departement, Frank Majoor (tegenwoordig permanent vertegenwoordiger bij de Verenigde Naties), besloot de notitie niet door te sturen aan minister De Hoop Scheffer (CDA), aan wie deze gericht was. „Goed opbergen in de archieven voor het nageslacht, de discussie is hiermee voor dit moment gesloten!”, werd op het memo geschreven.

De juristen reageerden met de opmerking: „Het audite et alteram partem (hoor en wederhoor, red.) geldt hier kennelijk niet.” Het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken (BZ) wil niet ingaan op de vraag waarom de SG het memo niet doorstuurde en of De Hoop Scheffer destijds wellicht mondeling kennis heeft genomen van de inhoud van het memorandum.

Komende weken wordt duidelijk of de Eerste Kamer een onderzoek start naar de besluitvorming rond de Irak-oorlog. Het kabinet beantwoordde onlangs tientallen vragen uit de senaat, maar een meerderheid beoordeelde het resultaat als onbevredigend.

Een mooi Engels woord: accountability. Tot nu toe een groot tekort hieraan bij ons regering.
Balkenende denkt dat als hij lang genoeg nee blijft zeggen, dat wij hier genoegen mee nemen.

Sharon Lock, an Australian from the International Solidarity Movement, was working as an ambulance driver for the Palestinian Red Crescent when its Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza City came under Israeli attack yesterday.

"One shell landed outside the building about 10 yards from the incubators for new babies. We were putting fires out with buckets of water. The shrapnel seems to burn for a long time and it starts fires if it is not put out. We were just dealing with that when we heard shooting from the front steps of the hospital and my colleague Mohammed came to me covered with blood. 'Israelis are shooting at people who are leaving their houses,' he said. What happened was that a father and mother and two daughters had left their home, one of the daughters had gone missing and the other was shot. The bullet went through one cheek and out the other. As the father was coming up the steps he fell, shot as well. They didn't know where the other daughter was. Mohammed and I decided to go out and find her. We found her hiding in a house. I would say she was about nine. She was very frightened."

Israeli forces hit a Red Crescent hospital Thursday, and more than 100 staff members and patients were trapped as a blaze engulfed the administration building.

Another strike hit several high-rise buildings, including one that houses the Reuters news offices.

Reuters had given the Israeli military the location of its office before the fighting broke out last month. On Thursday, as the Israeli forces moved in, Reuters staff members said, they called the Israeli military to remind it where they were.

Two minutes after the call, a shell hit the office, the Reuters staff said.

The Associated Press reported that gunfire struck its office in a separate building.

Bombing of Gaza a war crime

Israel’s bombardment of Gaza is not self-defence – it’s a war crime

ISRAEL has sought to justify its military attacks on Gaza by stating that it amounts to an act of “self-defence” as recognised by Article 51, United Nations Charter. We categorically reject this contention.

The rocket attacks on Israel by Hamas deplorable as they are, do not, in terms of scale and effect amount to an armed attack entitling Israel to rely on self-defence. Under international law self-defence is an act of last resort and is subject to the customary rules of proportionality and necessity.

The killing of almost 800 Palestinians, mostly civilians, and more than 3,000 injuries, accompanied by the destruction of schools, mosques, houses, UN compounds and government buildings, which Israel has a responsibility to protect under the Fourth Geneva Convention, is not commensurate to the deaths caused by Hamas rocket fire.

For 18 months Israel had imposed an unlawful blockade on the coastal strip that brought Gazan society to the brink of collapse. In the three years after Israel’s redeployment from Gaza, 11 Israelis were killed by rocket fire. And yet in 2005-8, according to the UN, the Israeli army killed about 1,250 Palestinians in Gaza, including 222 children. Throughout this time the Gaza Strip remained occupied territory under international law because Israel maintained effective control over it.

Israel’s actions amount to aggression, not self-defence, not least because its assault on Gaza was unnecessary. Israel could have agreed to renew the truce with Hamas. Instead it killed 225 Palestinians on the first day of its attack. As things stand, its invasion and bombardment of Gaza amounts to collective punishment of Gaza’s 1.5m inhabitants contrary to international humanitarian and human rights law. In addition, the blockade of humanitarian relief, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, and preventing access to basic necessities such as food and fuel, are prima facie war crimes.

We condemn the firing of rockets by Hamas into Israel and suicide bombings which are also contrary to international humanitarian law and are war crimes. Israel has a right to take reasonable and proportionate means to protect its civilian population from such attacks. However, the manner and scale of its operations in Gaza amount to an act of aggression and is contrary to international law, notwithstanding the rocket attacks by Hamas.
